Utilities

In my constant quest for programs that will help me write more and better I happened upon Write or Die which is a nice little program that pokes you with pitchforks if you take a break and rewards you with trumpets if you make it to the word count you desired in the amount of time you wished to spend. Those trumpets are very triumphant. Below is my visual reward... which I share with you. Consider this blog my digital trophy room.

My computer and its failings

Okay, perhaps it's not my computer's fault entirely... but I'd like to blame the computer for a moment.

In the past week or so I've spent exactly 4 hours and 7 minutes writing. I had completed about 37 pages of relatively interesting material which was headed on a great course to completion of a workable first draft from which to revise (a lot).

Those of you who know me personally know that I'm very interested in computers and technology in general and I am always using some of the latest applications to aid me in my quest for hassle-less computing. Sadly, my reliance recently on Microsoft's beta project "Live Mesh" as a backup tool turned out to be a nightmare. That 37 pages, all 4 hours and 7 minutes, were completely erased and are now non-existent. (Beta indeed!)

While this is certainly a setback I'm quite calm about the entire thing in all  honesty. The opportunity to re-write will only heighten the tightness of the script, although I would have rather honed in after a completed first draft. At any rate, the work will continue.

I've started using a number of tools to help me with this project. One of the tools is HourGuard which keeps track of the time I write exactly. It also asks for an "hourly wage" as an input so you can generate swanky sheets of paper with numbers and a bottom line to hand to potential buyers. I've decided that the writing I'm doing this time around is worth a modest $10/hour. If it ever makes the money back I'll be shocked, heartened, and happy. I'll certainly post that info here.

At any rate, more progress to come in the future. More applications, more writing, less computer mishaps, and more fun. Plus (once I re-write some of it) actual samples from the play.

Until "again,"

The Project Itself

Over the course of this summer of 2009 I will write a full-length play.

*** "good for you" "very ambitious" "who hasn't?"  ***
...say the cheerers and jeerers. Well, that's my project.

May until August is the general time frame. You're free to follow along if you wish. I'll be posting regular journal entries on:

  • My progress
  • My process
  • My tools
  • What's motivating me
  • Snippets of original material

For those of you really interested in the on-goings of this project feel free to contact me directly.

To be completely honest, I've written this play before. Or, well, kind of written it before. The topic is the same as a play written 5 years ago during my undergrad. The "overhaul" of the play is far greater than a new draft and is a complete re-writing from the source material.

Why? The images wouldn't get out of my head after 1/2 of a decade. That's why.

At the moment I have 30 brand new shiny pages of written material. It's looking pretty good too. We'll see how it goes from here.

Welcome to the project.

Happy Reading!
